Finding Your Artistic Niche
Meet Erin…
costume designer, portrait artist, and the entrepreneurial force behind Miss Billie’s Vintage. Erin’s story is one of blending her childhood surrounded by her mother’s handmade Halloween costumes and festive decorations with her passion for art. Her path has taken her from the bustling world of costume design in New York to live portrait painting in Miami, with creative outlets like playing the piano along the way. Now, she’s channeling her diverse talents into running a thriving vintage store.
Erin’s journey is proof that the creative path isn’t linear, but every step adds to your unique story. You’re going to love her insights and learn how she built a business that blends her love of vintage and art.
Combining Creativity and Entrepreneurship
Erin Olson changed the game for event art by creating digital portraits at high-end events in the U.S. Using a tablet and a TV to show her work live, she made 10-minute mini art pieces in watercolor, pastel, or charcoal. Her unique style stood out from traditional caricature artists and helped her attract big-name clients.
She talks about how she overcame self-doubt, learned to value her work, and realized that charging more actually made her services even more popular. She also grew her business by working with other artists, helping them earn good money while taking a commission herself. Her mix of creativity, teamwork, and confidence helped her build a successful business.

“it was just one of those clear moments of epiphany, you know, where I walked out of that museum and I was like, I need to be a costume designer.”

“I started to realize that the more money I charged, the more people wanted me.”
From Musician to Costume Designer
Erin Olson always had a unique sense of fashion, even as a child, but it wasn't until high school that she began sewing and creating her own bold, unconventional outfits. While she initially pursued music and theater, studying oboe performance and taking years of piano lessons, a transformative experience changed her path.
During a college trip to Venice, Erin visited an exhibit on historical fabrics at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Inspired by the artistry, she had a life-changing realization: her passion was in costume design. She returned home and sought guidance from a talented costume designer at her college, assisting with productions and learning the craft.
Recognizing the need to draw in order to succeed as a designer, Erin took night classes in pattern drafting and figure drawing, determinedly teaching herself a skill she initially lacked. Her story highlights her drive to follow her passion, proving that creativity and hard work can lead to incredible achievements.
